Best Overall health Supplements
Many of my articles on this website so far have focused on supplements for specific issues, such as anxiety, depression, etc. However, I want to now focus on supplements that can benefit every person, regardless of whether you suffer from specific anxiety disorders/depression or your mental health is fine. Read on for my five best overall health supplements you should be taking.
Wow, where to start with Lion’s Mane? This gem of a mushroom has been found to deliver significant neuroprotective benefits. Famous mycologist (someone who studies mushrooms and fungi) Paul Stamets vouches for their neurogenerative and neuroprotective effects, and several studies back up his assertion that this is one of the best overall health supplements you could take.
A lion’s mane mushroom supplement has the potential to improve your health and memory, even protecting you from diseases of old age such as Alzheimer’s (although it must be stressed that lion mane isn’t a cure, it’s just potentially beneficial in protecting against the illness).
Always first make sure you are not allergic to mushrooms before trying this supplement. If you don’t have an allergy I really recommend Lion’s Mane as one of the essential overall health supplements. I like the version by Real Mushrooms because it’s certified organic. I give this supplement 5 out of 5 for its overall positive effects on health.
Regarded as nature’s chill pill, magnesium is a mineral that many people do not get enough of in their diets, and there is no way I was ever going to write a post on the best overall health supplements without including it.
Magnesium deficiency causes a range of both physical and mental issues, which I have experienced personally and they have not been fun. I’ve had tremors, fasciculations, anxiety, and more from not getting enough magnesium. It’s likely your diet lacks magnesium too—this study found that magnesium deficiency is the most underdiagnosed electrolyte deficiency in current medical practice.
Magnesium supplements come in several different forms, some of which are utterly useless as health supplements, and some that excel. I prefer magnesium glycinate, and I like Pure Encapsulations’ version best.
Ashwagandha is an amazing supplement that made a tremendous difference to my overall levels of well-being. Ashwagandha has positive effects on body composition, hormones, fertility, and even cancer (it’s not a cure but it’s given to help alleviate symptoms).
Furthermore, ashwagandha is an adaptogen, meaning it helps you respond to stress much better and reduces your cortisol levels, which in turn reduces your chances of becoming ill from common ailments like the common cold. It would be impossible for me to compose a list of the best overall health supplements and not find a place for wintery cherry, as ashwagandha is commonly referred to.
I like the Gaia Herbs version of ashwagandha. The bottle contains 120 capsules, and I recommend starting with a single pill daily, checking your response for a week, and increasing the dose to a maximum of three tablets per day.
No list of best overall health supplements would have a shred of credibility without the inclusion of a good fish oil supplement. Fish oil contains a host of healthy fats that are difficult to consume in sufficient quantities without following a diet such as the Mediterranean diet.
Fish oil benefits your heart, your arteries, and your brain, and I believe it’s something most people should take. However, before you go rushing to buy fish oil, make sure you don’t have a shellfish allergy or other fish allergy. Conflicting reports say that you might not react well with fish oil if you are normally allergic to shellfish.
I prefer the version by Viva Naturals because it’s highly concentrated.
Last but by no means least is an excellent supplement that has proven invaluable to me as someone who lives in a part of the world that gets very little sunlight for much of the year.
In addition to being critical for bone health, vitamin D3 also positively impacts mood. The normal method of obtaining requisite D3 is from the sun. But since the sun likes to only show its face in many parts of the world during winter for like a few hours each day, it’s imperative to supplement with D3 to avoid the winter blues, or to use its scientific name, seasonal affective disorder.
Vitamin D3 can prevent certain autoimmune conditions in addition to protecting you against annoying illnesses such as the flu. I like Just Potent’s soft gel capsules.
So, that concludes my list of five best overall health supplements. I honestly recommend taking all of these supplements to anyone who wants to improve their general level of mental and physical health. All supplements in this list have scientific studies backing up their positive effects, but as always, do your own research if you want to be extra prudent, and never exceed recommended doses.
